504 Plan Information

TO ASSIST 504 STUDENTS AND PARENTS

Review 504/IEP Plan, especially accommodations for your child. Remember the protocol or chain of command in Special Education (sped). Contact the sped teacher first and ask for a face to face meeting. Then have your meeting about your issues.  If nothing happens, wait again in a timely manner for a week, then two, ask for a meeting with sped teacher and Dept. of Special Education Chair. This should clear up all issues.  If not, then ask for an administration meeting and a new 504 or an addendum to the old one. A new 504 will state the same information and the necessary steps to insure parent requests.

In working with special education teachers, please ask for a face to face meeting. This ensures the teacher knows this is important. For example, if the sped teacher forgets to inform the student teachers’ of the 504 Plan or IEP, and a copy of the 504/IEP to those teachers, then this issue needs to be resolved. All parents talk in a positive way about the mistake at the face to face meeting. Please be sure to remember to work with the teacher in a timely manner so that all issues are resolved.

At this time get a copy of the student’s schedule and emails addresses of all teachers. Halfway through the grading period, email all teachers about the progress of the student. If there are issues, contact the special education teacher to resolve the issue.

Try to compliment the sped teacher even if there is nothing to say. You will be working with the teacher for the school year or years. Sped teachers are busy and mistakes, when made, can be corrected.

There is a long list of accommodations for the 504 students and students with IEPs. Parents and teachers pick the ones that are appropriate for students. This list can be sent to you. Please contact Paula Gutshall on the Contact page or call 505-304-0355.
